- From the 1970s to the early eighties, poor youths of America's major cities were faced with increased crime and negative influences. Through their amazing talents , creativity, and determination they developed what is now known as the hip hop culture. This culture enabled them to express themselves purely through dance, music, and art. It was a time when originality meant everything, and biting other peoples styles was not accepted. Because of original, individual expression, the styles of break dancing, m.c. ing, and graffiti were able to flourish and develop. At the peak of all this expression and positivity, hip hop became recognized by the media as a source of profit. Graffiti was moved onto canvasas, breakdancers were displayed as circus acts, and rappers replaced m.c.'s with albums and music videos. The spirit of hip hop has not completely died though. Keep it alive by learning about it, practicing it, and teaching it.
